Church "Saint Great Martyr George the Victorious" in the town of Zlatitsa

Various information about the church organization and the church in Zlatica exist from the middle of the 18th century. The sources indicate that the church-religious life in the settlement, which during the Ottoman slavery was the center of the Qaza and with a predominantly Muslim population, has been conducted regularly and for a long time.

In 1825, for the needs of the local church, it was ordered to be copied and subsequently bought by Daskal Todor Pirdopski, his largest book - a voluminous pendict, which indicates that Christianity is a part of the life of the few local Bulgarians. The book contains 987 pages and is adapted for the main worship service in the church - there are short services for all major holidays throughout the year.

A spiritual temple probably existed at that time, as information is found in Bulgarian monuments about its epitropas, i.e. board of trustees.

The construction of a new temple in Zlatitsa became possible only after the Crimean War (1853 - 1856) and, above all, after the issuance of Hatihumayun (1856) - a reform act that regulated a number of rights and freedoms of the Christian population in the empire .

And here in our history, dear friends, the golden church "Saint Great Martyr George the Victorious" appears.

Church "Saint Great Martyr George the Victorious" in the town of Zlatitsa

It's a quiet Sunday morning.

Zlatitsa is all quiet.

I stop by the white temple.

Its doors are wide open and I enter.

A kitten says "Hello!" to me.

I smile at him and take his picture.

The cat of the temple

It stands still - it does not move.

He's probably weighing whether to run or trust me - he doesn't know me, obviously.

On the right is the old church fountain - after all, I am in Zlatica - the city of fountains.

Zlatiška Church "Saint Great Martyr Georgi Pobedonosets" is the work of master carpenters from the villages of Smolsko and Mirkovo, built with the voluntary help of the entire Bulgarian population in the administrative center.

An initiative committee of leaders was chosen for the construction of the temple, and the two cousins Pancho and Vasil Tsatsini were sent to request permission from the Ottoman authorities in the capital of the empire.

For their difficult journey, they were helped by the well-known benefactors Mladenovi from the village of Dolno Kamartsi – at that time a settlement within the borders of Zlatishka kaza.

To what extent this is true, it is difficult to say - in the commemorative and grateful inscription made after the consecration of the church, such data are missing, but what was said does not contradict the usual practice of that era.

The yard for the Golden Temple was donated by the local resident Todor Lazarov, and the church itself is of the cross-domed type, slightly dug into the ground, with a high middle nave, a spacious balcony, a carved iconostasis, of no particular value, and quite late icons - 61 in number , described by N. Mladenov.

The carpenters Nikola Germanov from the village of Mirkovo and Gancho Trifonov from the village of Smolsko took an active part in the construction.

The consecration took place on April 20, 1859, by Bishop Hilarion of Lovčany, which indicates that the construction started at the latest the previous year.

The commemorative inscription on the brick fence

A commemorative inscription announcing the event is embedded in the temple's brick fence.

The church had a wooden belfry, which was replaced by a brick one in 1940.

The relief sculpture decorating the building on the stone pillars at the ends of the walls, made of Chelopek sandstone, is rich and varied. In addition to a leaping deer, an image of St. George, the year the building was built, a dove and a double-headed eagle, the image of an elephant attracts the attention of the laity - extremely rarely used in this type of art in our country.

Specialists point out that for the period of the Renaissance, this is the only one in the Bulgarian lands of that time. In addition to him, the masters depicted two lions, with facing heads and large eyes and spreading manes, two snakes - guardians of the tree of life, a rooster, and numerous plant motifs.

How to get to the town of Zlatica?

Zlatitsa is a city in Western Bulgaria. It is located in the Sofia region, near the town of Pirdop. The city is the administrative center of the Zlatitsa municipality.

The Sub-Balkan Road* crosses Zlatitsa.

*Republican road I-6, better known as the Sub-Balkan road, is a first-class road from the Republic road network of Bulgaria with a direction from west to east, passing through the territory of nine districts: Kyustendilska, Pernishka, Sofia district, Sofiaska, Plovdivska, Starozagorska, Sliven, Yambol and Burgas.

Its total length is 508.5 km, which makes it the longest national road in Bulgaria.

Zlatica stands at:

  • 77 kilometers (about 1 hour and 18 minutes by car) from the capital

  • 119 kilometers (about 1 hour and 55 minutes by car) from the city of Plovdiv

  • 441 kilometers (about 5 hours and 28 minutes by car) from the city of Varna

  • 317 kilometers (about 3 hours and 49 minutes by car) from the city of Burgas

  • 32 kilometers (about 37 minutes by car) from the town of Koprivshtitsa

Zlatitsa is a small town, nestled literally* between the southern slopes of the Balkans and the northern hills of Schtinska Sredna Gora, as well as between the connecting ridges of the two mountains Galabets and Koznitsa, in the middle of the highest of the Trans-Balkan fields - Zlatishko Pole, or as it is also called – The Golden Hollow.

*The distances to the two mountain ranges are extremely small. In the northern direction, parts of the town of Zlatitsa and the village of Tsrkvishte are at the very foot of the Zlatishko-Tetevenska Stara planina, and the villages of Karlievo and Petrich in the south - in Soschinska Sredna gora.

The town is located 680 meters above sea level. and occupies the central part of the Zlatishko-Pirdop valley, in the spacious and water-rich valley - here flow several rivers from the basin of the Topolnitsa River.

To the northwest is the city of Etropole, to the northeast – the city of Teteven, to the south – the city of Panagyurishte, to the east – the cities of Pirdop, Koprivshtitsa, Klisura, Sopot, Strelcha, Karlovo. To the west is the city of Elin Pelin and the capital.

Through the Zlatish Pass and the city of Etropole is the connection with Northern Bulgaria - Botevgrad, Pravets, Mezdra, Vratsa, Pleven.

Through Panagyurishte - to Pazardzhik and Plovdiv.

The most direct connection from Sofia to the sea passes through Zlatitsa.

On the railway line passing through the area are the two largest railway tunnels in Bulgaria - Koznitsa (6 kilometers) and Galabets (3 kilometers).

Kazanite waterfalls near the village of Chavdar

In Chavdar, an annual assembly is held on Mount Sveta Petka, which is located above the village. The locality is named after the patron saint of the village, Saint Petka.

The place is not accidental, because the view from it is exceptional. From there you can see the entire Zlatishka valley, even the Topolnitsa river. A chapel "Sveta Petka" was built there.

Archaeological Park "Topolnitsa" is also located nearby.
