Klisura waterfall by the Sub-Balkan road to Klisura and the views from it

Surely many of you have heard about the wonderful Antonovsky (Antonsky) waterfall, also known as the Butterfly, located along the Sub-Balkan road itself.

Probably most of you have even stopped by the road to enjoy it, because in the spring during its high water it is really charming and magical.

Next to the Podbalkanski road itself, near the Antonovski waterfall (about ten kilometers east of it, about 7 minutes by car), there is another very beautiful waterfall, cutting through the southern slopes of the Balkans.

Klisura Waterfall has formed a narrow, small, but wonderfully beautiful canyon in the middle of the southern slopes of the Balkans. Visually, it is difficult for me to determine the height of the waterfall, because the water falls in several falls, and the rocks and dense vegetation, which definitely contribute to the overall magnificent vision of the place, prevent me from determining the total height.

The river on which this wonderful waterfall was formed flows east of the Stryama River and is its first left tributary, because it flows from north to south and flows into the Stryama southwest of the town of Klisura, crossing the Sub-Balkan Road and the Sub-Balkan Railway Line Sofia - Burgas.

This river rises south of Kamenitsa Peak (2104 meters) in the Central Balkan Mountains and is probably fed mainly by the melting snow in the spring. The length of this first left tributary of the Stryama is only about 4 to 5 kilometers, but it has cut through and wonderfully sculpted the rocks on the southern slope of the Central Balkan Mountains, right here – before the town of Klisura.

The view south from the waterfall is fantastic!

You can see the small valley of the Stryama River, formed under the Koznitsa ridge, like in the palm of your hand.

How to get to Klisura Waterfall?

Klisura Waterfall is located right next to the Sub-Balkan Road* near the turnoff to the town of Klisura.

*The Republican Road I-6, also known as the Sub-Balkan Road, is a first-class road in the Republican road network of Bulgaria with a west-east direction, passing through the territory of nine districts: Kyustendil, Pernik, Sofia Region, Sofia, Plovdiv, Stara Zagora, Sliven, Yambol and Burgas.

Its total length is 508.5 km, making it the longest republican road in Bulgaria.

Klisura Waterfall is located:

  • 109 kilometers (about 1 hour and 30 minutes by car) from the capital

  • 94 kilometers (about 1 hour and 20 minutes by car) from the city of Plovdiv

  • 384 kilometers (about 5 hours by car) from the city of Varna

  • 278 kilometers (about 3 hours and 20 minutes by car) from the city of Burgas

  • 25 kilometers (about 28 minutes by car) from the city of Koprivshtitsa

It is important to note that unlike the special turnoff built near Antonovski Waterfall, there is no turnoff built here at Klisurski Waterfall. You can stop at the nearest one and walk to the observation point, being especially careful of fast-moving vehicles.
